Our "Almost" Camp-out

It was a beautiful, sunny, spring day. Trevor had the next two days off and so did Dave. We were in the mood to do something fun together to enjoy the time with our families. There was only one problem... we were both broke. Haha!

Chels and I have both been in the mood to go camping, and thought that would be fun. But since we couldn't afford to go that particular week, we decided to have our own little camp out in my yard.

The kids played outside in the warm sunshine all day while we put together a yummy dutch oven dinner of teriyaki chicken and cheesy potatoes, with an amazing peach cake for dessert. Trev and Dave were in charge of cooking it =)

The kids thought it was pretty cool to hang around the fire pit with the adults while dinner cooked and filled the air with yummy smells.
This was their solution to there only being one camp chair that they all wanted to sit on:

We invited Rose and Charlie over for dinner too since we had so much food. The plan was to eat dinner, then roast marshmallows at the fire and sleep in our tents set up in the field. However, just as dinner was finally ready to eat, a cold wind started to blow. Rain started to splatter around the fire pit. We ended up having to bring the table up onto our front porch and eat our dutch over dinner huddled up in coats and blankets. The food sure was delicious though!
Until, of course, a bit gust of wind came up and blew Kenzi's plate away while she was still eating. Everyone's drinks went flying too.

Kenzi was rather forlorn after that.

Well, needless to say, we didn't sleep outside in the rain and snow that evening. But the kids had been so excited to have a sleepover that we didn't have the heart to tell them that they couldn't. So they all had a camp out upstairs in the loft instead. The adults spent the night downstairs watching movies. It was still a lot of fun! We'll be attempting the back yard camp out again in the near future, hopefully with more success!
